Styrofoam Snowman with Super 77

For this glitter project, you will need:

  • Styrofoam balls of at least two sizes (I chose three sizes for this snowman.)
  • White, clear, or other snow looking glitters (below is a list that I used)
  • Jumbo, Colossal, or other large flake glitter in a black color (I used Black Shadow Colossal Flakes, 0.125 in size.)
  • Various colored push pins (for the buttons) If you have small buttons those will work too (apply them with the Elmer's or Tacky glue)
  • A mini fake carrot and small or mini sized hat and scarf combo (If you knit or crochet you can make the hat and scarf combo or there are many different Snowman mini bags that you can find at your local arts and crafts stores.)
  • Two twigs for arms
  • Elmer's or Tacky glue
  • One pair of craft gloves
  • 3M Super 77 Spray Glue

Snow glitters I used for the project:

Snow White Iridescent (a craft glitter)

Arctic Frost (a poly metallic glitter)

White Lily Dream (a poly pearlescent glitter)

Perseus Flicker (poly iridescent glitters)

Atlas Dazzle 0.040 (poly iridescent glitters)

Stonehammer Glimmer (poly iridescent glitters)

I did a mix of all the white glitters (shown above) for the body of the snowman.

I used a mix of 1/16 to 1/8 cup of the Snow White Iridescent craft glitter and two tablespoons of each of the Poly glitters. The amount of glitter mix to make will depend on the size of the snowman you are making.

After I put the craft gloves on, I sprayed the Styrofoam with the Super 77 spray glue outside (due to the toxic fumes that spray glues give off while spraying).

Next, I pressed the glue covered Styrofoam into the glitter mix. Note: The more spray glue used, the better the glitter will stay put. If you heavily spray the Super 77 glue you will get lovely valleys that will give a more realistic look to your snowman.

I suggest spraying half of the ball and coating it with glitter. Then spray the other half and coat it. It is best not to spray glue on the glitter surface. It makes it tacky and also can knock down the shine. Using some paper as a mask to keep from over spraying is helpful.

I then placed a dot of glue (Elmer's, Tacky, or other type glue) in the areas that I wanted the eyes and mouth.

Placing the larger flakes of the black glitters onto the glue, you will get a look at how the face will look for your glitter snowman. Make sure to place as many as needed so the snowman eyes and mouth are pleasing to you.

You can then glue on the carrot nose.

I had to angle the snowman head to allow the glue to dry properly (so the nose would set on the snowman's face without falling off as it dried). I used strong toothpicks or you can use coat hangers to make the balls connect to each other.

After you place the scarf, hat, and buttons onto the snowman you will have a wonderful snowman decoration.

Here he is!
