Making Glitter Pumpkins & Gourds with Elmer's Clear Glue

These glitter pumpkins and gourds are great for all the Fall holidays!

For all the items on this project page, I used Elmer's Clear Glue.

Project 1: Artificial Gourd (glue and glitter mixed)

The process that was utilized was to add the glitters to the glue and then paint the mixture onto the gourd (or pumpkin). I used both Craft Glitters and Polyester Glitters for these projects.

I took several colors of green glitters and mixed them together and then added glue. Make sure that the glue and glitter mix is not too thick. If the glitter is too thin in places you can always apply another coat after the first glitter glue coat has dried. I put the green over the parts of the gourd that were naturally green.

I then took a couple of gold glitters and mixed them together. I then applied them with a brush. I brushed the gold onto the areas that were naturally gold.

This is how the pumpkins and gourds looked when it was finished.

Project 2: Artificial Gourd (drop glitter method)

In this portion of this blog I painted the glue onto the pumpkin then applied the glitter on top of the glue.

I wanted a rich green look so I chose to take several glitters and mix them together in a cup. I threw in a little glow in the dark to give it a dramatic effect at night.

You are now ready to brush on your clear glue. Make the layer thick enough to really grab the glitter, but not so thin that the glitter slides off the surface due to gravity.

The glitter can be applied by pouring it onto the wet glue. Be sure to press the glitter into the glue so it really sticks.

You can mix all sorts of color combinations to make the gourd more interesting. In this case, I did a green mix and also an orange mix.

The finished pumpkin is super shiny!

Final Note: If you are concerned with glitter flaking off you can try a sealing your dried project with a spray sealer. We recommend one of the following Krylon products (Glossy NOT the matte), Krylon Crystal Clear, Clear UV, or Glitter Blast. Anytime you choose to use a sealer, you will knock the shine of the glitter down a bit. Use as little sealer as you can. Beware that when using craft glitters only use a small amount of the spray sealer as the craft glitter can melt!!!
