For this project, we are showing how to glitter a cotton T-Shirt. We suggest using a washable fabric glue. Other glues will not hold up to the repeated washings clothing goes through.
For this glitter tee shirt project, I used Aleene's Flexible Stretchable Fabric Glue.
The Aleene's Flexible Stretchable Fabric Glue says to allow 24 hours to let the glue set into the cloth fibers. It also states to wash inside out. Only hand wash for 7 to 10 days after applying the glue. Other brands of glues may have different instructions. There are many fabric glues on the market.
Items used for this project:
- Aleene's Flexible Stretchable Fabric Glue
- Poly Glitter (we chose Poly Iridescent Mystic Starlight for our glitter)
- A small paint brush
I prepared the shirt by washing and drying the tee shirt, then placing a piece of cardboard in the middle of the tee shirt (so you do not glue the tee shirt to itself).
I placed a little glue directly to each bubble on the shirt. An alternate way to apply the glue is with a paintbrush. You want to make sure that the glue gets pressed into the tee shirt material.
You can sprinkle the glitter (with your fingers or with a paint brush) onto the glue and
then press the glitter into the glue with the paintbrush or your finger. Repeat the process for each section of the shirt you are glittering up. Work in small areas so your glue does not dry up.
You may also choose to add a little more glue onto the glitter to stabilize and seal the glitter (keep it from flaking).
The glitter tee shirt came out wonderfully!
